Safe, Secure Accomodation

We provide a high standard of safe, temporary accommodation for women and their children (if any) in our purpose built refuge (self-contained flats) and safehouses in Wigtownshire. Our Aim is to provide women with a secure and welcoming environment, where they can receive tailor made support in order to determine their own future. In addition, staff are also on hand to facilitate practical and creative activities which strengthen women’s self esteem, confidence and social interaction.

We also support children and young people staying with us, to play and build their confidence after school, at weekends and during school holidays. This helps the children feel more relaxed and have fun while they adapt to staying in temporary accommodation.

CRISIS/DROP IN SERVICE

Our Crisis team respond to initial referrals to the service and signpost within the team as appropriate.

Women can drop in without a prior appointment for emotional support, advice and information on housing, well-being, legal, financial and family issues.

Crisis workers also facilitate user led support groups that support women affected by domestic abuse . The focus will be for women to meet others, gain confidence, learn new skills, take part in leisure activities and have fun, at their own pace.

The Crisis Team also provides in house training and awareness raising for groups or organisations across Wigtownshire.

We believe that if more people understand the dynamics of domestic abuse, the more responsibility society will take to tackle it.

Our Community Engagement Worker provides practitioner based training and awareness raising to other agencies, community groups and third sector organisations.

Sessions can be tailored to individual groups and teams and can include:

  • An overview of our service and how we support women, children and young people affected by domestic abuse.
  • The different forms of abuse and how to recognise the signs.
  • How domestic abuse impacts on children and young people.
  • Sessions covering all of the above.

To book a session or to discuss it further please email vivienn@wigwa.org.uk.

OUTREACH SUPPORT SERVICE

This service is available to women living in the community who have experienced or are living with domestic abuse. Our outreach service is designed to provide support to women who don’t require refuge accommodation or who have moved on from refuge accommodation into their own tenancy. Your worker will offer you support, information and encouragement with everyday life issues including finances, health and wellbeing, benefits and housing issues. Our support workers will arrange to visit you in your home or a safe place of your choice, usually on a weekly basis, to offer practical and emotional support to deal with and overcome the effects of domestic abuse.

WOMEN’S GROUPS

Crisis workers facilitate user led support groups that support women affected by domestic abuse to gain confidence and learn new skills at their own pace.
